IT seems nearly everyone has an opinion about Top Gear Australia - most of it being negative.
My review of the debut episode attracted 27 comments. The detractors used terms such as "wannabe'', "very disappointed'' and "kinda crap and a little dull'' while a minority said the Aussie version should be given time to settle.
Well, we're six weeks on from the first episode, so I thought I'd run the rule over the show again.
The three presenters, Warren Brown, Charlie Cox and Steve Pizzati, seemed a little nervous first-up trying to balance the need to be respectful to the British original and be uniquely Australian.
Weeks later, when you look at it as a show in its own right, they haven't done that bad a job, but when compared the original, there's still work to be done. That was to be expected, considering how good Clarkson and co. are.
It was good to see parts of Australia being showcased during challenges, such as the Whitsundays and the outback.
A highlight though was Steve and Warren driving a tractor down Toorak Rd and damaging a car while trying to reserve park. Anything to make us low to middle class types feel better.
The "What we're they thinking'' segment (some would argue what was SBS thinking allowing for the show in the first place) was a trip down memory lane for some motoring enthusiasts, but seemed a little awkward to watch at times.
Yes, it's not as good as the UK version, but remember, even Clarkson, May and Hammond needed time to settle. Just look at their original efforts in this studio format (Top Gear had been a 30-minute magazine-style show for 24 years) to know what I'm talking about.
But the good news for fans of the UK Top Gear is that SBS will be screening new episodes from Monday, November 24 after the first season of the Aussie version ends.
If you didn't like Top Gear Australia, imagine what the Americans will do when their version begins next year.
What do you think, has Top Gear Australia improved at all over the last couple of weeks?
