 Embrace caravan campers: Ingram

Embrace caravan campers: Ingram

20 Apr, 2009 03:49 PM
THE time is right for Gippsland to embrace and manage itinerant campers visiting the area, according to Gippsland East MLA Craig Ingram.

Mr Ingram said he had been working with the relevant agencies to discuss options for the management of the ever-increasing caravan and camper market in Gippsland.

"Some operators in our region have expressed frustration at the presence of itinerant campers along river banks and other public areas as they perceive this growing trend as a threat to the viability and profitability of their business,'' Mr Ingram said.

"Current warning signs discouraging itinerant campers on public land are ineffectual, as the authority to move campers on is not available in most areas.''

Mr Ingram said prime sites across the region were regularly filled with large numbers of well-equipped motor homes, self contained caravans and tents.

"Some choose to stay in caravan parks; others choose to use public land, state forest of national park,'' he said.

"One of the major problems is that the current rules make it impossible to enforce the policies of our councils and the best solution is to recognise this growing market and establish infrastructure rules to manager their visit.

"The caravan and camping market is one of the largest growing sectors of the tourist industry and our region must embrace and manage this sector to ensure we get the most economic benefit from visitors.''

Good on you Craig. Takes a clear thinker to see past the short sighted comments of those who cannot see the benefits to communities from the growing population of self contained travelers.

I am one of these free loading itinerant caravanners. I cannot afford caravan parks. My rig is self contained with everything. I spend my money in the local shops, buy fuel locally, visit museums and if free always leave a donation. No amount of rules will prevent freedom camping. In Warnambool area who are paranoid about freedom campers we still freedom camp but due to the Council having such a disgusting attitude to freedom campers we retaliate by spending no money. We still freedom camp in front of the councils nose and they will never be able to stop it. Generally freedom aged pensioners are considerate, don't litter and pick up litter left by overseas tourists who are shocking in hygiene and rubbish disposal. As Australians we have a right to freedom camp and those that try and stop it are UN-Australian tin gods. Look at the figures tourism in areas where charges are high and on the Nth Coast of NSW and Queensland where the greed is great policy has seen prices increased ten fold. Now they are deservedly suffering and lower cost areas are booming. The grey nomads and gypsy network works faster than any other in Australia. We are mobile and have mobile internet. Many small towns do extremely well out of freedom campers. Look at Cleve on the Eyre Peninsula. We detoured there especially for the facilities they offer. We filled with fuel, bought groceries and left a donation. Orbost if you want to go broke quicker than you are learn to embrace the freedom campers.

We stay in many "free" camps with our caravan- and always leave the place as clean or usually cleaner than we find it. We then nearly always spend our money in the area, buying groceries, fuel, gifts, meals and much more on many of these stops. My wife and I are currently exploring South Eastern Australia on an eight week holiday in our van- and I can safely say we have spent much more money in areas where we can "free" camp than in areas where we pay to camp.
