Flying school concerns

17 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
BUSINESSES at West Sale Aerodrome are concerned their operations may be hindered if the interim military flying is located at the aerodrome.

Wellington Shire Council has been promoting Wellington, and West Sale Aerodrome in particular, to military aviation training companies since 2008 as a potential pilot training location.

The flying school would operate from 2012 for six years as a precursor to a new permanent home for the Defence Basic Flying Training School.

However business owners at the aerodrome are concerned by a clause in the invitation to register that they fear would hinder their business operations.

The clause states that the aerodrome operator (Wellington Shire Council) must obtain "a guarantee that the ADF training can be accommodated without interruption or impediment from other aerodrome activities''.

Bob and Lorraine MacGillivray of Edge Aviation said while they had no problem with increased flying activity at the aerodrome, they were concerned the clause would prevent businesses and recreational pilots from flying.

"We have no objection in principal to Air 5428 and have no objection to having the flying school here at West Sale,'' Mrs MacGillivray said.

"We and other businesses are deeply concerned by a lack of communication between Wellington Shire Council and businesses on the airfield and other stakeholders.

"We just want to ensure the businesses aren't going to be shoved aside.

"We need to ensure businesses have a future here.''

Mrs MacGillivray said businesses were told at a meeting with council on Wednesday that council would guarantee the ADF its operations would not be disrupted.

"But when we asked if our businesses would get the same guarantee, they (council) said no,'' she said.

According to the MacGillivrays, council had not included the relevant businesses in the a consultative process, requested their input or informed them on possible impacts on their businesses.

"If anything we are in support of the flying school, but we don't want to be left out of the equation,'' Mrs MacGillivray said.

However council's director of strategic management Bruce Graham said council had been in contact with business operators over the last week.

Mr Graham said council did not believe problems would arise from businesses and the Interim Basic Flying Training School both operating at the aerodrome.

"The majority of the private businesses are in and around the terminal building, if it's successful, the Basic Flying Training School will be in the area occupied by the TAFE,'' he said.

"There should be no problem having both operating.

"And there is likely to be business opportunities arise out of the Basic Flying Training School.''
