Flying school push

11 Sep, 2009 05:00 AM
THE State Government will do all it can to help Sale secure the relocation of the RAAF Basic Flying Training School, according to Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan.

Ms Allan met with Wellington Shire Council officials and Gippsland East MLA Craig Ingram to discuss the relocation push during a recent visit to the region. Wellington Shire Council has been promoting the shire, and West Sale Aerodrome, to military aviation training companies since 2008 as a potential location for the Interim Basic Flying Training School.

RAAF Base East Sale is the Defence department's official "assumed'' site for the relocation of the RAAF's Basic Flying Training School from Tamworth, NSW.

"I've been working closely with the council on the proposal,'' Ms Allan said.

"We would be very keen to see the Basic Flying Training School come to Sale, as the town has the history of a strong link to the RAAF Base and we'll be very supportive of the application.''

Ms Allan said the State Government could provide practical assistance by supporting the construction of the new netball courts, the relocation of East Gippsland TAFE from Fulham to Sale and registering their support with the Defence department.

Mr Ingram said he was pleased to see the State Government backing the proposal.

"We need to make sure this bid is put forward in the most positive light as possible,'' he said.

"I believe it's a real possibility for the region.''

Wellington Shire mayor Darren McCubbin said he was hopeful State Government assistance could mean the East Gippsland TAFE relocation from Fulham to Sale could happen by 2012.

"We need to ensure we have a green field on the horizon at Fulham for 2012,'' he said.

"It's a gamble but we've got strong support... and we think it's worth it.''

Construction of the new netball courts on Cobains Rd will be going to tender "very soon'' and construction should start towards the end of the year, Cr McCubbin said.
