SPEED limits on the boundaries of the region's towns need to be reviewed for the safety of residents, according to Wellington Shire Councillor Malcolm Hole.
Cr Hole was commenting on a petition recently presented to council calling for the speed limit on Tyson Rd in Heyfield to be dropped from 100kmh to 60kmh.
Petitioners were calling for the speed reduction on the road from Mustons Lane to Angle Channel Rd.
A report to council said the council had already raised the issue with VicRoads, with VicRoads ruling there was insufficient development along that section of Tysons Rd to warrant a speed reduction.
The recommendation was for council to take no action on the matter, but Cr Hole successfully put up a motion to ask VicRoads regional management to review the speed allowed on roads close to Wellington towns.
Cr Hole said it was an issue that needed to be addressed as development of the towns increased.
"It's been a long time since we've reviewed speed zones along the peripheral,'' he said.
"There needs to be a review for the safety of our residents ... we need to talk to VicRoads and get their opinion.''
