A FAMILY of six was lucky to escape a devastating house fire in Maffra on Friday afternoon.
The fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical appliance fault, levelled the home of Greg and Alison Davison in a matter of minutes.
Luckily, the family's four children, Krystal, Jemma, Kiralee and Tyson were in school at the time.
''We (my wife and I) were out bush collecting firewood,'' Mr Davison said.
''Now the only things I have left are my family, my car and my chainsaw.
''We've completely lost everything.
''I just have to be so grateful my four kids and my wife weren't in (the house).
''The CFA did a really good job, but there's just nothing left.
''Everything I worked so hard for is gone.
''My animals are gone, I can't replace them.
''My daughter, she's only 12. She's now stuck with seeing her dog burning to death for the rest of her life.
''I said to my kids, we've just got to take it one step at a time.''
Mr Davison said it only took 15 minutes for the house to be burned to the ground.
Among the treasured items lost in the fire was Alison's wedding dress, a laptop containing family photos, and a prosthetic leg for Mr Davison, who is an amputee.
But Mr Davison and his family remain strong after such a devastating event.
''I just tell my kids to take it one day at a time. This won't beat us,'' he said.
The local community has rallied behind the Davisons, with donations of food, clothing, and furniture.
''We've been really grateful for friends, family and people we haven't seen for years and people we don't even know, who are offering us things like furniture,'' Mr Davison said.
''The school is rallying behind us, to buy our kids new uniforms.''
A local business has also offered to completely re-furnish the Davison's new house for free when they move in.
But Mr Davison still needs a wheelchair or arm crutches, since he struggles to walk without his proper prosthetic limb.
