Illegal worker anger

16 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
ACTION needs to be taken to stop "hundreds'' of foreigners working illegally on farms in Wellington Shire, according to the Australian Workers' Union.

The call comes after about 40 illegal workers were netted working on farms in Wellington shire in the the past two months in raids by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Nineteen illegal workers were caught in early October, and another 23 in August.

At the time an Immigration Department spokesman said the raids had netted illegal workers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal, Vietnam and China.

He said the majority were detained at Marybrynong Detention Centre for being unlawfully in Australia or for being in breach of their visa work conditions.

Australian Workers' Union organiser Sam Beechey said the problem was reaching boiling point in Gippsland.

``The amount of illegal immigrants working on farms in Gippsland is in the many, many hundreds,'' Mr Beechey said.

Anyone with information about illegal workers or visa overstayers should phone the Immigration Dob-In Line on 1800 009 623.

The princely sum of 42 illegal workers have been rounded up sparking a furore from the Union movement. This is a worlwide phenomenon that plagues the planet, from Nth America to Europe. Third world economies are exporting their citizens to developed countries in an effort to alleviate their own responsibilities. We only have ourselves to blame for this predicament and no Union or Government Department will stop a person that is seeking a better quality of life no matter how hard we try. The unions should be motivating their membership base to accept the positions that these farmers are obviously struggling to fill with local labour instead of protesting. Sam Beechey should put some names and places to his comment of hundreds of illegal migrants working on Gippsland Farms. Let me remind you, they arrived to this country, granted entry and eventually filtered through the system gaining employment doing jobs that the locals wont do. I stand to be corrected but if it means produce not being picked and processed let them do it. I am of the opinion that rounding them up is only part of the solution. They are handling food, there are health issues that need addressing also.
