LOCAL woman Danielle King will be taking it all off - her hair that is - for a good cause.
Ms King will have her long, thick brown hair cut off this month in both a fundraising bid and to donate her locks to Melbourne wig maker Louis Barnett and Sons to be turned into a wig for cancer patients currently undergoing chemotherapy.
Ms King explained that she wanted to do something different to help raise money for cancer patients.
"I've wanted to do something for ages for the Cancer Council,'' she said.
"I haven't got much time and I haven't got much money, but I do have a lot of hair.''
So, after the popularity of the Leukaemia Foundation's Shave for a Cure fundraising effort, Ms King decided she wasn't going to waste her hair.
"So many people have their long hair cut and then they just throw it away,'' she said.
"There's this idea that in order for hair to be made into wigs, it needs to be virgin hair, that it has to be long and free of grey.
"That's not the case. They take all kinds of hair - all colours, all lengths. All it has to be is up in ponytail.
"The idea of having a wig for cancer patients is to give them a bit of normality back into their lives. It feels a lot nicer to have a wig made out of real hair, rather than having something that feels like straw. It helps to restore a bit of their confidence and give them some control back.''
Ms King has approached the Cancer Council in order to raise funds for cancer research.
"Even just a gold coin donation will go a long way,'' she said.
Ms King's hair will be cut off at St Thomas's Primary School, Sale, at about 2.30pm on Friday, February 19. If you wish to make a donation to Ms King, you can phone her on 0439 360 772.
