McGauran calls for tax cuts

12/04/2007 1:50:55 PM
GIPPSLAND MHR Peter McGauran is supporting calls for the Victorian Government to lower taxes listed in the Intergovernmental Agreement.

Mr McGauran said all GST was paid to the States and Territories.

"When the GST was introduced, the State Governments agreed to abolish ineffective taxes such as mortgage duty, cheque duty, lease duty, rental duty, unlisted marketable securities duty and non-real non-residential conveyance duty," Mr McGauran said.

"The states must honour their commitment and provide some tax relief to hard working people and small businesses."

Mr McGauran also said the Federal Government would not allow the GST to be increased.

"There is no need to increase the GST and the Treasurer has made it clear that he would veto any increase above the existing rate of 10 per cent," Mr McGauran said.
