Melbourne to Maffra Rally

22 Oct, 2009 11:28 AM
THERE will be plenty to see when Gippsland Vehicle Collection's Melbourne to Maffra (M2M) Rally arrives in Maffra on Saturday.

Gippsland Vehicle Collection spokesman Ian Kennedy said The Shannon's Super Rig would be set up, there would be a unique Darracq vehicle and the cars from the Melbourne to Maffra Rally would also be arriving.

The activities will be at The Maffra Shed, 1A Sale Rd, Maffra from noon until 5pm.

The second annual M2M Rally is a non-competitive event for vehicles aged more than 25.

Vehicles will travel from Berwick through Poowong and Glengarry and will arrive in Maffra from about 3pm.

There will be a big variety of cars participating in the rally, the oldest an immaculate 1926 Austin Roadster which will be driven by Malcolm Chestney.

The Shannon's Super Rig will be set up outside the vehicle collection on the Saturday afternoon.

"The Shannon's Super Rig is a massive auto-expo on wheels,'' Mr Kennedy said.

When opened up the rig is 24 metres long and 8m wide and contains Sony Playstation gaming consoles, a display of automotive memorabilia and will play famous automotive footage on large plasma screens.

A rare 1924 Darracq will be on display inside the vehicle collection.

"The Darracq was made in France,'' Mr Kennedy said.

"It has a four cylinder, water cooled petrol engine that drives through a three speed gearbox to a very unusual differential.

"In their day the Darracq was used for racing and won many races in the 1920s both in Europe, England and America.''

In 1905 a Darracq V8 Special created a world record, travelling at a speed of 176.46 kilometres per hour (109.65 miles per hour).

On Sunday the rally heads back to Melbourne through Thorpdale and Buln Buln before finishing at Officer.
