Mixed bag for schools

04 Feb, 2010 11:24 AM
THE Federal Government's new My School website presents a mixed picture of the performance of local schools.

Yarram Primary School recorded above average results in writing and spelling, while St Mary's Primary School in Yarram was below average in reading, writing and spelling.

However, according to Yarram Primary School principal Penny Earle, there was more to what went on in schools than what was presented on the My School website.

"It's only a small snapshot and there are a lot of schools putting in the hard yards which will not necessarily be reflected in these specific results.

"It's important parents look at the whole school rather than just the data on this website.''

Another standout was Cowwarr Primary School which recorded above average results across the board.

The `lower performers' seemed to be the schools in more remote parts of the region.

Loch Sport Primary School was substantially below average in almost all areas.

Principal Chris Malone said remote schools were faced with a different set of challenges and circumstances to most schools.
