New program at hospital to help manage illness

11 Jun, 2009 12:19 PM
CENTRAL Gippsland Health Service is, for the first time, offering the popular Better Health Self Management program for people with chronic conditions.

This accredited course is suitable for those with arthritis, lung or heart disease, diabetes and many other health conditions.

The program covers topics common to those learning to live with ongoing health problems.

It also aims to empower patients by providing information and teaching skills and techniques to improve self-care and doctor patient interaction.

The ultimate goal is improving quality of life.

Research has shown that people who attend the course gain significant improvement in their general health.

They also experience reduced distress about their health, as well as reduced fatigue, disability and limitation in their daily activities.

The course was developed and evaluated by Dr Kate Lorig and her colleagues from Stanford University, USA, in 1996.

The total program, including the book Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions by Dr Lorig, costs $50.

A relative or friend is welcome at a cost of $5.

The program will run for two and a half hours per week for six consecutive weeks beginning Monday, July 13.

These sessions will be held at the Community Rehabilitation Centre at CGHS, Guthridge Parade, Sale.

Bookings have opened and can be made by phoning Better Health Self Management course leaders Sheila Cross or Karen Templeton on 5143 8800.
