One night success

01 Jun, 2009 04:04 PM
POLICE have praised the behaviour of concert-goers at Triple J's One Night Stand, with Sale police reporting no unusual increase in crime on the weekend.

Acting Inspector Russell Patten said the 12,000 people attending the concert were all well behaved and they didn't have too many problems both at the concert or in town afterwards.

"From our perspective the event was a success,'' he said.

"We just wanted people to have a good time and stay safe and we succeeded in achieving that.

"When you look at the significant increase of people in the area and the number of reported incidents, it was very well managed.

"Obviously the crowd was there to enjoy the event and not cause any trouble.''

The event wasn't completely trouble free with "a couple of people'' caught with drugs.

One man tried to steal an item at the event and was immediately caught by security guards and police.

Inspector Patten said there were no reported assaults and just a few reports of vandalism.

But he said Taskforce Razon, in town to inspect licenced venues, did detect "a number of breaches'' at some of the licenced venues in town.

Traffic management for the event also ran smoothly and there weren't any serious accidents.

Inspector Patten said the strong police presence at the event and in the town afterwards helped to make sure there was no trouble.

He was also keen to dispel rumours of a large stash of drugs being found on the oval before the event.

"We took two drug dogs through the area before the event and we didn't find anything,'' he said.

Wellington Shire mayor Darren McCubbin said he was pleased with how the event was managed and thanked police and emergency services for having such a strong presence in the town.

"I'm very pleased to report it was a fantastic concert and a well behaved crowd,'' he said.

"Even me as an old fogey thought the Hilltop Hoods were pretty cool.''

He said the display by the RAAF Roulettes made the concert a unique Sale event.

"To actually have a long and extended display of the Roulettes, it really brands this town and this concert as special,'' he said.

He again thanked Wellington Shire's youth council for campaigning for and organising such a significant event.

Cr McCubbin said there were no serious rubbish issues on the oval itself but the area surrounding of the oval was a little messy after the event.

The football ground was left looking worse for wear but Cr McCubbin and Sale Football-Netball Club president John Patten are confident it will be fine for the footballers to play from this weekend.

"We'll be right, the ground will come up fine by our next game, after the council fixes it up,'' Mr Patten said.

"It's no worse than if we'd played there really.

It was a really well behaved crowd, overall, it was really well run by the shire.''
