Paramedic strike is abandoned

23 Jul, 2009 12:41 PM
SALE'S planned paramedic strike was abandoned on Wednesday after Fair Work Australia declared the action illegal.

The strike would have involved one shift in Sale being stopped for four hours on Wednesday morning.

However, FWA's order meant all industrial action by Ambulance Employees Australia members had to cease immediately, including any stop work action or bans which enforced a 10-hour rest break.

AEA state secretary Steve McGhie said paramedics in Sale would have go about their normal business, but were disappointed with FWA's decision.

"The fact that Fair Work Australia has an order against us to lift all our bans - not just the stop work action which is what Ambulance Victoria sought - is disappointing,'' he said.

Mr McGhie defended the proposed strike action, saying the only threat to the health and welfare of patients was paramedic fatigue.

"Paramedics are more determined than ever to win longer rest breaks to combat fatigue and secure fair wages,'' he said.

Mr McGhie said the AEA was deciding whether to appeal FWA's decision.

However, Ambulance Victoria said it applied to Fair Work Australia to end the AEA's protected action, fearing it would risk public safety.

Ambulance Victoria chief executive Greg Sassella said he welcomed the decision.

"We have always said that this was never going to be resolved by bans and strikes; it will only be resolved by discussions,'' Mr Sassella said.

"We can now sit down for 21 days of meaningful discussion with the union without the threat of industrial action hanging over our head.

"We can have frank discussion with everything on the table and hopefully resolve this for our paramedics.''

Paramedics and Ambulance Victoria resumed negotiations on Tuesday.
