Popular pancake

WHEN Luke Henderson had to make a pancake for school, he never imagined it would be anything special - much less win a share in more than $3000 in prizes.

But, it did just that.

Luke's pancake - dubbed the `Tower of Terror' - managed to tick all the boxes for a competition run by Home Economics Victoria by being creative, original, tasty and healthy.

With three layers of pancakes with strawberries, kiwi fruit and banana in between, topped off with a dollop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of passionfruit sauce, nobody would disagree that Luke's pancake sounds delicious.

Luke's luscious creation won him and his school $3000 of Sunbeam cooking products.

Luke is no stranger to cooking. As part of the grade six curriculum at St Patrick's Primary School in Stratford, the grade takes a home economics class every two weeks.

Teacher Rose Lee said the class regularly learnt about making meals and cleaning up.

"They all plan and prepare the meals based on the various food groups, and they also work to a budget of $34 per week,'' Ms Lee said.

"It's all about really important skills. They all got a chance to create their own pancakes. They had to write the recipe, take a photo as well as write a review.''

As for Luke, although he seems to have a gift for culinary creations, he said he didn't want to follow a career in hospitality.

"I just made it, really. The colours go together, and I wanted it to be high,'' he said.
