Street safety police blitz

24 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
ALCOHOL-fuelled violence on Sale's streets won't be tolerated, according to local police.

Sale police are launching a safety blitz this weekend after 15 men were caught brawling in the carpark of a Sale service station early last Sunday morning.

Police said they were forced to use capsicum spray and foam to subdue the men and one man was arrested for being drunk.

Senior Sergeant Henry Van Andel said police wanted the community to know Sale was a safe place to be.

"After last weekend, we want to send reassurance and the message to the community that Sale is safe,'' Snr Sgt Van Andel said.

He said police would have a "highly visible'' presence in Sale and surrounding communities during the weekend.

According to Snr Sgt Van Andel, police encouraged people to enjoy themselves while at local licensed venues, but to do it responsibly.

"We work closely with the Wellington Central Liquor Accord and it seems what's underpinning all the problems we're having is responsibility.

"It's the responsible serving and consumption of alcohol.''

Snr Sgt Van Andel said police were working hard to deal with the issues that often led to alcohol-fuelled violence.

"There are complex social problems involved and when you mix it all up, this (violence) is what we're getting,'' he said.

"The community is sick of it.

"It's sending the wrong messages out - Sale is not like Melbourne.

"People need to learn to have respect for other people, their property and their opinions.

"But if you play up, expect to be dealt with.''

It's a good start: Used to see this sort of garbage of a weekend around closing time at Ringers at the Mobil servo down the road: Apart from the usual overly intoxicated imbeciles giving the staff at the service station a hard time, there were others who deliberately showed up with their group of thug mates just to cause trouble. This sort of thing is not as uncommon as we'd like to believe. A good mitigation strategy may involve putting establishments on notice about the responsible service of alcohol and looking inbto a CCTV network to start proactively identifying this sort of activity (and other activity).
