THE relocation of East Gippsland TAFE to land closer to Sale is one step closer, with Wellington Shire Council approving a planning amendment to allow the TAFE to relocate.
Councillors voted unanimously to adopt the amendment, known as Amendment C45, at this week's council meeting.
Council will now submit the amendment to the State Planning Minister for approval.
Council needed to create Amendment C45 to assist the relocation of the East Gippsland TAFE from Fulham to land adjoining the Port of Sale precinct south of the town's CBD.
The site is currently home to netball courts, which will be relocated to the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex on Cobains Rd, due to be completed at the end of the year.
The land subject to Amendment C45 is a roughly triangular area of about three hectares.
The council report suggested including a development and design overlay as part of Amendment C45, as recommended by an independent planning panel.
But the councillors voted unanimously to adopt Amendment C45 without any changes.
Councillor Peter Cleary, one of the councillors who supported the motion, said the amendment was an encouraging sign of progress.
"Now we have room for the TAFE to move from West Sale to here, and therefore to move the netball courts to our new sport complex,'' he said.
"It's something I know a whole bunch of people, not only from the shire but also from the TAFE and other areas ... have worked very, very hard for.
"It's great to see the ball is really rolling at the moment for this.''
The council report noted one objection to the amendment based on the historic value of the drill hall and the closure of an historic road, and concerns the site is flood prone.
But the report states the land was not affected by either the heritage overlay or flood overlay controls.
The report noted "the adoption of Amendment C45 is likely to attract ongoing objection from the one objector to Amendment C45, but is expected to be well received by the broader community''.
