Wellington Earth Fest

12 Oct, 2009 03:12 PM
THE first ever Earth Fest has been hailed a success by organisers, with over 700 people from as far away as Cann River, Leongatha and Melbourne attending.

Earth Fest was a joint project between Stratford Primary School and Wellington Sustainability Group.

The festival included an official welcome to country by Gunai-Kurnai representative Sandra Nielsen and event patron Christine Kininmonth shared her experience as an inventor and the role of innovation in working toward more sustainable living practices.

Ms Kininmonth said she was impressed with the range of innovation and ideas the region had on offer.

The festival also featured a wide range of energy and water efficiency products with plenty of information available from specialists and retailers.

One of the big successes of the day was the Wash Against Waste trailer that was hired through the Sustainable Living Foundation.

It included a fully-equipped trailer with gas-boosted solar hot water. All it requires is a little water and some keen volunteers and thousands of disposable plates, cups and items of cutlery that usually accompany a festival are made obsolete.

The band of volunteers were kept busy washing throughout the day but the clean-up was made so much easier with the absence of the usual throw away food and drink containers.

Festival goers were treated to a wide range of freshly made food, including home-made lemonade and pedal-powered smoothies.

Children and adults alike took to the idea of having to pedal for the reward of a smoothie.

There were workshops for those wanting to brush up their skills in pasta, cheese and scone making, and the Gingerbread workshop was kept very busy with about 30 children sharing in the culinary fun.

There was the traditional school fair activities including a cake stall, car boot sale, fairy stall, face painting and the sponge toss.

A quiz for festival goers aimed to reinforce the messages of Refuse, Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.
