Clinton's aiming high

27 Mar, 2009 04:00 AM
THE fact he has an intellectual disability has not slowed down Clinton Jee's basketball dreams.

After recently winning a bronze medal playing for the Victorian team for people with an intellectual disability, Clinton, from Sale, has been selected to represent Australia.

Clinton has been playing basketball for about four years, and at a height of 198cm, it's no wonder he's a natural.

"I like (basketball) because it's a great way to socialise and get fit at the same time,'' he said.

Clinton was part of the Country Victoria team that won bronze at the week-long Ivor Burge tournament held in Townsville in February.

Clinton's dad John said he was proud of Clinton's efforts.

"He played every game in the tournament, he's very fit,'' John said.

For the tournament Clinton averaged 19 rebounds, 19 points per game and almost eight blocks. In his highest scoring match, he managed to score a whopping 28 points.

"He was by far and away the most valuable player,'' John said.

"He just missed out on receiving the most outstanding player of the tournament.''

Clinton said he was thankful to local Sale businesses who got behind him for the Ivor Burge tournament with sponsorship.

Clinton's next big tournament will see him represent Australia in the International Federation of Sports for the Intellectually Disabled's (Inas-Fid) second Global Games.

The games will be held in July at Liberec (near Prague), in the Czech Republic, and will give Clinton the chance to mix it with players from all over the world.

"I'm excited, it'll be my first time over seas,'' he said.

In fact, it will be Clinton's whole family's first time overseas, as his mum, dad, brother and sister will all be going over to support him.

According to Clinton, selection for the Australian team involved a series of gruelling try outs.

"There was a fair bit of competition,'' he said.

Clinton is so passionate about basketball, he said it is something he would like to pursue professionally.

"I want to play at the highest level I can,'' he said.

And with the amount of discipline and dedication he shows, John thinks Clinton will make it.

"He's always training, shooting hoops or at the gym,'' he said.

"I can't believe how dedicated he is.''
