THE final round of the Tour of Wellington hosted by Wellington Cycling Club was held on Saturday.
The four stage tour tested riders over the past three weeks with an individual time trial, two fast flat road races and a testing hilly road race circuit all commencing in Stratford.
Tour organisers have been excited to see 36 riders participate in the three grades of racing.
Tour results were based on points gained from intermediate sprints, hill climbing and final placings.
A grade was the most hotly contested with eight riders sharing the points. Rob Deery was overall winner, winning two stages and king of the mountain.
Other stages were won by Ben Dowsett and Mick O'Connor, with O'Connor also taking out the sprinters' prize.
The final overall placings were Deery, O'Connor and Phil Brown, who was promoted to A grade during the series, finished in third position.
Dowsett who had begun the tour on a high note winning the time trial was relegated to fourth place overall.
In B grade, Gary Lucas had the series won after round three, and ended up winning the overall classification, king of the mountain and tying for the sprinters' prize with Allan Rankin.
Final overall standings were Lucas, Alec Mates and Rankin.
Brent Sword started the series as a serious threat, fourth in the time trial and winning stage two, but was unable to complete the series.
Dave Murray and Kristie Glover had an exciting battle for the C grade overall prize with Murray winning the sprinters' prize, but Glover dominating in the hills.
In the final count back for overall tour placings, Murray ended up on 29 points with Glover on 26, Maurice O'Neill in his first race with the club was able to show enough form to squeeze in for third, just ahead of Reg Goltz and Sharon Dilley.
Many C grade riders, although unable to put points on the board, have shown improvement with Geoff Warr having a solid race in stage two and both Grant Smith and Gary Cotterill determined in the intermediate sprint competition.
Next race on the calendar is the Morwell to Glenmaggie on October 4, starting at the Morwell Leisure Centre at 10am.
