 Eagles down Parrots

Eagles down Parrots

11 Aug, 2009 10:09 AM
MAFFRA kicked away from an enthusiastic Leongatha team, winning 17.15 to 11.6.

Maffra coach Graham Robbins said Leongatha used several of the thirds players to cover the loss of its seniors.

Robbins said the Parrots played well but ran out of legs against the fitter Eagles in the last term.

Maffra went into the match without consistent mid fielder Craig Robbins, who could miss one more match, and Ben Coleman and Kel Porter are out for the season.

But Maffra could have Northern Bullants' David Adams and Casey Scorpions' Jed Costigan back for the finals and Gippsland Power's John Butcher and Edwin Carr could also be in for consideration over the finals.

The results from round 16 show the fight for the 2009 flag is a two-way battle between the Maroons and the Eagles.

The Eagles started well kicking 4.5 to two straight in the first term.

Adrian Burgiel, who was named best for the Eagles, kicked five goals and Nick Horsford was also good up forward with four.

Ben Robbins used his outstanding ball handling skills to set up opportunities for teammates with his creative play on the ball and at midfield.

Owen Booth continues to ruck well, working in with Ben Robbins, Edwin Carr and Gary Jones to give the Eagles an edge around the packs.

Booth was also good up forward with two goals.

Ben Durrant, who also gets value for possessions, had plenty of the ball and Matt Lee and Sam Bristow were solid in defence.

The Eagles made good use of the perfect playing conditions at Leongatha, where the team work and general skills overpowered the young Parrots in what was a high standard match.

The Eagles should win their remaining matches against Garfield at home and Drouin away.
