 Eagles to down the Parrots

Eagles to down the Parrots

07 Aug, 2009 05:00 AM
LEONGATHA will be at home to Maffra and the Parrots are nicely placed in third spot on the ladder.

But the next two rounds against Maffra then Traralgon will be a guide as to how well the Parrots will fare in the finals.

It should be a fast moving encounter with both teams using the wide-open spaces to move the ball quickly.

Dwayne Holt has had an outstanding season for Leongatha with 70 goals at full forward but Maffra have two key forwards in Daniel Stubbe and Adrian Burgiel who kicked 10 between them in the win over Morwell.

The Eagles' defence led by Josh Bristow, Ben Batalha, Joseph Stubbe and Matt Lee has been solid and at mid field Hayden Burgiel, Craig Robbins, Brendon Rathnow and Michael Coleman have been providing match winning drive.

Justin Sutherland has been good in the ruck for Leongatha, Clint Johnston and Dwayne Holt have been good up forward.

The Parrots will be competitive in what will be a high standard match, with the Eagles to set up a good win.

Sale v Moe

SALE will be at home to Moe in its last home match for the season on Saturday.

The Magpies will be keen to take the fight right up to the Lions who are fourth on the ladder and preparing for a shot at the flag.

There were a few good signs for the Magpies at Traralgon as their young guns fired.

Toby Leeds in defence is playing with confidence, taking strong marks and his ground play was good against the Maroons. Leeds won several balls at ground level and worked his way through the traffic to put Sale into attack.

Jason Garrett, Terry Wheeler, Harry Cross, Darcey Thorpe and Andrew Quirk have all improved and game time has been a bonus for these young players, who will be part of the Magpies' rebuilding program next season.

Wheeler, Cross and Thorpe are quick, have good skills, win plenty of hard balls and never stop trying.

Last Saturday's match at Traralgon was a good standard and the final score line was not an indication of how well the Magpies played in a fast moving match.

The Magpies' experienced players Adrian Cox, Kane Fraser, Russ McAdam, Nick Fowler, Chris Laverty, Tom Sturgess and Justin McLay have been getting plenty of the ball and you can expect an improved showing against Moe on Saturday.

The Lions have been playing well with Troy Makepeace at midfield, Chris Hancock in the ruck and Matt Forys up forward.

Morwell v Traralgon

TRARALGON has been winning matches with several of its top players out of action, but it has the best depth in the competition.

The Traralgon seniors are on top of the ladder, the reserves are also on top, the under 18 team is second to Maffra and the under 16 team is also on top of the ladder.

Morwell has been competitive but nothing like the team that was runner up to Sale in last year's grand final.

The Maroons are very even, they run the ball well, make opposing teams pay for turn overs and the goals have been shared around with Jamie Aitken and Michael Cooper scoring goals.

It will be another good match but Traralgon will be too strong for the Tigers.

Garfield v Drouin

DROUIN, holding fifth spot on the ladder, will be too strong for Garfield in their match at Garfield on Sunday.

Drouin has the bye next round then has a tough one against Maffra in the last round so they will be keen to take the points against Garfield.
