Must win game for Wildcats

14 Aug, 2009 10:28 AM
NORTH Gippsland football finalists Churchill and Woodside will meet in the last round of the home and away fixture.

Woodside's somewhat surprise loss last weekend resulted in the Wildcats' top three chances slipping as they fell to fourth position.

With the stakes high against them, the top five makeup appears unlikely to change after the conclusion of this week's round.

The Cougars premiership defence begins in 10 days time when they front up in the qualifying final.

Must win for Wildcats

WHILE Churchill's premiership campaign continues to gain momentum, Woodside has somewhat fallen away late in the run to finals.

With many new recruits to work with, coach Travis Ronaldson had the Wildcats playing exciting football during the season, but a shocking run of injuries has seen the Wildcats drop away from their mid season mark.

This week's clash primes as the last test for Woodside before it begins its first finals campaign since joining the league.

Woodside's Nick Stockdale and Mark Collison have also been standouts in past weeks.

Woodside's forward stocks are also impressive, but have been dealt a blow in past weeks with Justin Staley missing through injury.

Dropping two of their last four, Woodside needs the win to remain optimistic about finals, the points crucial in its top three chances.

Bombers go for double chance

BOISDALE-Briagolong is edging closer to a top three finish, with the points this week paramount in ensuring the side claims the double chance.

Hosting Sale City, the Bombers will have a tough challenge ahead of them before they embark on consecutive final campaigns.

While City's chances of bumping the Tigers out of final contention are against them, the Dogs will have plenty of pride on the line.

The Dogs finished within two kicks of the Bombers at the final siren in round nine, with Clint Counahan the standout forward on the ground, booting five for City with Brad Pedder and Matt Bayliss also solid performers.

The match is primed as one of the games of the round and should not disappoint.

Roos to down Bombers

HEYFIELD will host Traralgon Tyers United before sitting out the first week of the finals.

The Kangaroos were impressive in every minute of the game last Saturday, demonstrating why they carry the premiership favorite tag.

Heyfield has lost just two games to sit on top of the premiership standings, with its only defeats occurring in its opening match against Woodside by 22 points, and to Boisdale in round six.

Since their round six loss to Boisdale, the Kangaroos have won 12 straight, a daunting prospect for TTU.

The impending minor premiers will prove too strong for TTU.

Blues have momentum

RIDING high off the back of its 10 goal defeat of Woodside, Rosedale goes into its clash against Stratford with plenty of momentum and confidence, but it can't afford to be complacent.

Stratford's last victory came against reigning premiers Churchill in round 10.

Winning three of their last six matches the Blues, like Stratford, boast young lists that are often inconsistent.

Rosedale dominated the round nine meeting between the two sides winning by 44 points in wet and windy conditions.

Tigers need strong start

GORMANDALE booked an elimination berth last week, defeating Sale City.

But the Tigers can't get too far ahead of themselves against Cowwarr, which got the better of them earlier in the year.

Convincingly beaten last week against Heyfield, the Saints will be keen to rebound and finish the season on a winning note, with a win against the Tigers not out of the question.

With plenty on the line, Gormandale know how important the points are and need to start strong to firm its hold on fifth position.

GLENGARRY has the bye.
