National championships

11 Aug, 2009 10:12 AM
FOLLOWING in the footsteps of their football idols, three local players recently competed in the National Schoolboys Championships.

Kaine Allen, from Maffra Secondary College, and Josh Cashman and Dermott Prout from from Catholic College Sale, were selected to play for the Under 15s Country Victoria football team.

The championships were held in Maroochydore, Queensland, from July 26 and August 1.

There were eight teams in total in the under 15s tournament, with Vic Country winning all five of its games.

In the final Vic Country defeated Western Australia 7. 13 (55) to 4. 3 (27).

Kaine, Dermott and Josh played alongside 25 other players from across regional Victoria, with big names like Buddy Franklin and Joel Selwood having also played in the championships when they were at school.

Kaine said a highlight of the championships was defeating the Vic Metro side.

''They had been champions for the past three years,'' he said.

''We went through the tournament undefeated ... the scores didn't tell much, they were really tough games.''

Kaine also said he enjoyed lining up against ''the best of the best'' of Australia's young footballers.

He said he hopes to make the team again next year and continue improving his football.

Josh described the carnival as ''a good experience''.

''We made some good mates and to come away with a win was even better,'' he said.

''It was probably the toughest level of footy I've ever played.

''Winning the grand final was an awesome feeling.''

Josh plans to continue playing footy, next year he wants to make the under 16s Gippsland Power side.

''And the under 16s Vic Country side, to play the same ournament again.''

The boys also said they wouldn't have made it to the tournament without the help of local Darren Cowell, who sponsored all six Vic Country under 15 boys, as well as Nash Holmes.
