Swans push Roos

06 Jul, 2009 03:14 PM
NORTH Gippsland ladder leader Heyfield was pushed by an ever-competitive Stratford.

The bottom-placed Swans fought back in the fourth term to draw within four points of the Kangaroos.

Trying conditions tested both sides, five points was the difference after a low-scoring opening term.

The Kangaroos got the better of the Swans in the second, making the most of their scoring opportunities with Nick Dowse leading the charge.

The home side rallied in the final term to come within less then a goal of the Kangaroos before the visitors got the break to win 10.14 (74) to 8.4 (52).

Aaron Duffy played a brilliant game for Heyfield, Dowse was instrumental in the midfield and finished the match with three goals while Justin Cox was prominent in defence.

For the Swans, Nick Farley, Dylan Cartwright and Brett Hudson were among the best, with Steve Nichols and Jack Bacon finishing with two goals each.

GLENGARRY put in a clinical display against Traralgon-Tyers United for its second win on the run to elevate it to sixth position on the ladder.

The Bombers struggled to fire and now sit one game clear on the ladder from the pack, led by last year's finalists Glengarry and Gormandale.

Led by Josh King, the Magpies were at their damaging best with the result all-but confirmed by half-time.

Glengarry kicked eight goals in the first half before a relatively quiet two-goal third term followed by another two in the final quarter.

The home side restricted TTU to three majors for three quarters of the match. The Magpies' backline contained Craig Backman and Ryan Farnham to three goals between them.

King and Linton Sizeland finished with three and two goals respectively.

Rory Jennings was among the best for the home side with Dean Pearce another notable contributor.

ROSEDALE returned to the winners' list, easing past Cowwarr to ensure keep its finals hopes alive.

The Blues marked their intentions early to establish a 17-point buffer by the first change.

The Saints challenged Rosedale in the second term, the two sides going goal-for-goal in a tight tussle.

The Blues only added 10 points to their quarter-time lead as Cowwarr, led by captain Luke Cooper and best-on-ground Jordon Bourke, kept the visitor within reach.

After the final change, Rosedale piled on five goals to one with Brad Caldwell and Rick Galea the catalysts in the forward line.

Cowwarr matched the visitors for three quarters before fading away in the final term to go down 16.11 (107) to 8.8 (56).

Blues Dean Morrison, Dale Fleming and Justin Emery battled hard for the victors, with Caldwell the pick of the goal kickers on five.

WOODSIDE rebounded from last week's loss to Heyfield with a 38-point home win over Gormandale, 14.7 (91) to 7.10 (52).

The Wildcats established a five-goal lead at the quarter time siren.

Held relatively quiet last week, Justin Staley was among the action early, causing headaches for the Tigers' defence.

Ronnie Burns was creative in and around the packs as he dominated passages of play.

The Tigers contained the Wildcats to two scoring shots in the second quarter but failed to make a bigger impact on the scoreboard in a low-scoring term.

Burns was outstanding throughout the match, while the midfield brigade of Daniel Elliott and Clint Staley gave the Wildcats first use of the ball on many occasions.

Travis Ronaldson was creative, likewise Mark Collison, who was a solid contributor. The league's leading goalkicker Justin Staley finished the match with five majors.

For the visitors, Lee Renton was a solid performer in the ruck, with Steve Burgess kicking four goals.

CHURCHILL was far too strong at home for Sale City, 15.8 (98) to 7.7 (49).

The match was all-but over by half-time after the Cougars booted 11 goals to lead by 45 points.

To the Bulldogs' credit they fought hard in the second half. The goals dried up for the Cougars as the two sides added a combined five goals after the main break.

Nathan McDonald finished with four goals with Brandon Mahoney and Daniel Hawking among the other multiple goal-scorers for the Cougars.

Coach Leigh McDonald continued his impressive form, while Joe Whykes was also among the best.

For the Bulldogs, Daniel Murphy and Troy Carstairs were solid contributors.
