On the national stage

MADELAINE Richardson will again represent Victoria, a remarkable effort considering she broke her leg 20 months ago.

Maddi will be part of the Victorian under 17 soccer squad to compete at the national championships, which begin in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales tomorrow.

After braking her tibia and fibula during a game, Maddi worked hard to bring her body and skills back to a high level.

She returned to captain the Gippsland under 17 team to the minor premiership in the inaugural statewide Summer League season and has now been selected to represent Victoria for the sixth time.

Maddi is one of four Gippsland girls, alongside Laura Croft, Alexandra Gummer, Stephanie Tanti, named in the squad of 16, which prepared well for the championships with impressive results against women's state Premier League teams.

"We haven't been training together that long, only about six weeks, but we've been playing really well,'' she said.

"Our team thinks we'll be able to win it, we should have a good shot. Hopefully a few girls can be identified (by W-League clubs).''

The Victorian team will get an idea of its chances when it meets one of the tournament favourites, New South Wales metropolitan, who includes players on the books of W-League teams, first up tomorrow.

Other teams expected to do well are Queensland, NSW Country and the host Northern NSW.

A defender, Maddi has been honing her skills with the National Training Centre in Melbourne and playing midweek matches against under 13 boys' teams.

She credits the NTC program with helping her to recover from the broken leg.

"They get all the good players from around Victoria and develop them further to get them into

(Melbourne) Victory and try to get them identified,'' Maddi said.

The scholarship holders also learn about nutrition, sports psychology and strength and conditioning.

Training and playing five-to-six times a week, Maddi still finds time for her year 12 studies at Catholic College Sale.
