Boss leading the way

30 Mar, 2009 01:57 PM
THE highlight of last Wednesday's race day at Greenwatte was the first appearance at a Sale meeting of jockey Glen Boss, who rode to fame on the back of Makybe Diva, winning three Melbourne Cups.

Boss linked up with local trainer Paul Worthington, who praised Boss' ride to win race six on his seven-year-old mare Norella, followed his instructions to the letter.

After the win Boss said to Worthington Norella was ``travelling like a winner'' from very early in the race. At the 800 metre mark, Boss was certain the seven-year-old was going to win.

Worthington said Norella had been a consistent galloper with a very good strikerate _ in the money 22 times with seven wins from 52 starts.

Norella began racing in Tasmania with early wins, but has also raced well since joining Worthington's stables three years ago.

Worthington and his partner Michelle Cooke ride the seven year old mare in trackwork and both said she was a delight to train.

Worthington said he had entered Norella in the 0-72 1800m mares race at Sandown tomorrow and was hopeful Boss would take the ride.

Dwayne Dunn was the outstanding rider on the day with a winning treble on Whiskey In The Jar, Palm Trilogy and Synergist in the last.

The treble has taken Dwayne to the top of the Sale premiership ladder with 10 wins, ahead of Peter Mertens, who has ridden nine winners at Greenwattle this season.

Trainer Lee Freedman continued his winning run at Sale, winning with Palm Trilogy and Synergist. Freedman has 13 wins at Sale this season.

Cranbourne galloper Jeuluna, trained by Robbie Griffiths and ridden by Jamie Mott, won the first event, the three-year-old maiden plate.

Briefed, ridden by Mark Flaherty, won race two, the two-year-old maiden plate.

Cranbourne trainer Greg Eurell and jockey Dunn combined to win race three with Whiskey In The Jar.

Fly De Angels, trained by Chris Manson at Mornington and ridden by Michael Connick, won the race four maiden plate.

Freedman and Dunn combined to win race five, the Country Showcase 0-78 handicap, with Palm Trilogy.

Pentup Lover, trained by Chris Hyland and ridden by Brad Rawiller, won race seven, the Showcase 0-72 handicap.

Dunn completed his riding treble on the Freedman-trained three-year-old Synergist in the last race.

It was another top day's racing and 60 members of the Sale and Maffra Probus clubs enjoying the racing from the sponsors room.

The next meeting at Greenwattle will be held on Thursday, April 30.
