Excelling in ideal conditions

25 Jun, 2009 02:43 PM
IT WAS life members' day at the Greenwattle race meeting on Monday, with the special guests and a very good mid-week crowd greeted by spring-like conditions ideal for racing.

Ben Melham made good use of the conditions to boot home four winners, while local trainers Colin Butcher and Ian Hutchins trained winners which had punters smiling with their better than expected returns on the tote.

Maffra trainer Butcher won the Max Blakiston Maiden Plate over 1700 metres with three-year-old colt Zaccheus, who has had just four starts since joining the stables.

Zaccheus finished third at Moe on April 25 in his first start for Butcher, followed up with a fifth at Bairnsdale in May then an impressive second last start at Sale on June 9.

Several locals who saw that run were keen to put their money on Zaccheus on Monday and they were rewarded with a dividend of $13.10 for the win.

The promising three-year-old was well-ridden by Luke Currie, who got home in a tight finish from Yasey San, ridden by Roger Booth, and Chang, Logan McGill.

It was Hutchins' turn in race five, the HM Cantwell 0-62 Handicap, with Up There And Adam winning after a thrilling finish from fellow local Lazari.

Trained by Paul Worthington, Lazari is on the way back after an operation. With six second placings, another win looks just around the corner.

Up There And Adam also had good form, coming off a last start win at Bairnsdale.

Hutchins was also pleased with the run of promising three-year-old gelding No Idea, who finished second to Holy Request, trained by Tracey Templeton at Moe, in race two, the AR Lee Maiden Plate.

In two starts at Sale, No Idea has been second in two very good runs.

Spirited Hero, trained by Colin and Cindy Alderson and ridden by Danny Brereton, won race one, the TP Martin Maiden Plate.

Peter Healey and Melham combined to win the JA Morrison Maiden Plate with Jet Boom

Melham continued his ride to glory on Coronation Diva in race six, the PT Gray 0-62 Handicap.

In race seven, the 0-78 handicap, Melham again won on Caulfield galloper Coppervue

Melham won his fourth race in race eight, the KJ Allman 0-62 Handicap, on Charlie's Queen.

Dane The Rave, trained by Alan Williams at Cranbourne and ridden by Brian Park, won the last, the Life Members 0-68 Handicap over 1200m.

The next meeting at Greenwattle will be held on Thursday July, 2.
