THE curtain comes down on the 2008-9 Sale Turf Club racing season this Monday, with its trainer, jockey and apprentice premierships more or less confirmed.
Lee Freedman holds an unassailable lead for the trainers' title with a total of 14 winners for the season, David Hayes and Peter Moody are both six wins adrift.
In the jockeys' premiership, Peter Mertens, with 12 wins for the season, holds a two-win lead over Dwayne Dunn with last season's leading rider Brad Rawiller in third place.
The apprentices' title looks likely to go to Brenton Avdulla, who has notched seven wins for the season at Greenwattle. Ibrahim Gundogdu (five wins) and Logan McGill (four) have the job ahead to catch Avdulla on Monday.
In excess of 250 nominations were taken for Monday's eight-race card.
Freedman has entered last start Sale winner Chatillion in the rating 68 over 1710 metres. A lightly-raced four-year-old by Zabeel, Chatillion basically fell in to win his maiden here on July 2 and does rise appreciably in class on Monday.
A better gamble in this race may be Secret Weekend, a four-year-old mare prepared by the in-form Moe stable of Peter Gelagotis.
The mare bungled the start last time out at Moe and was then held up in transit at a critical stage of the race. With better luck on Monday, Secret Weekend should be in the money.
There's plenty of depth in the rating 78 over 1210m, local gallopers Candy Man and Pennyashot among 25 entries.
Candy Man, trained by Kevin Milham, will have benefited from two runs back from a spell and did show useful speed here at Sale at the Metropolitan Wednesday meeting on July 15. He looks well-placed back to this 78 class, but does have 58kg to contend with.
Also at the July 15 metro fixture, Pennyashot didn't begin well and was then ridden up to challenge for the lead in the three-year-old 72 over 1200m. The effort naturally told and he punctured over the final stages, trainer Ian Hutchins will be hoping to end the season on a high with this three-year-old by Regal Shot.
The 1010m two-year-old maiden has attracted 45 entries, Freedman entering a trio of well-bred youngsters, the most notable being a Redoute's Choice colt called Finessed.
Purchased for $1 million as a yearling, Finessed is owned by the global breeding and racing powerhouse Darley and was an encouraging third on debut at Bendigo on July 8.
One to watch here is a Tony Noonan-trained filly by the name of Easy, this filly impressing in two official public trials.
Speaking of trials, a set of 10 official trials were conducted at Greenwattle last Tuesday with several runners entered for Monday's meeting.
Local trainer Cliff Murray's Quick Key scored in heat four and is nominated for the three-year-old fillies maiden (1210m), while heat seven winner Unscathed, trained at Moe by Allison Bennett, holds an entry in the maiden over 1010m.
Punters are reminded that the local racing for 2009-10 kicks off at Sale on Thursday, August 6 followed up two weeks later with another Thursday fixture on August 20.
The Sale Cup is this year down for decision on Sunday, October 25.
