MAFFRA has advanced to its second West Gippsland-Latrobe A grade netball preliminary final in four years with a resounding 48-39 triumph over Morwell in the first semi-final last Sunday at Warragul.
Melanie Van Baalen's height was again a telling factor as the Eagles' midcourt continued to utilise her presence in the goal circle with great effect.
Maffra held just a two-goal advantage at half-time but extended that lead to eight by three-quarter-time as Morwell fell off the pace with an insipid third quarter effort.
The midcourt of Bree and Kelly Burgiel capitalised on any errant passes by the Tigers as the Eagles went into the final term leading 37-29.
Morwell regained its composure during the final period, but it was all too late as the Eagles maintained their productivity to the final whistle to record a nine-goal win.
The Eagles will play Drouin tomorrow at Maffra after the Hawks lost the second semi-final 54-43 to Leongatha, who advances to the grand final.
IN other matches last weekend, Maffra earned the right to play off for the C grade premiership by accounting for reigning premier Morwell in the second semi-final by seven goals on Saturday at Sale, Sale defeated Maffra 36-33 in a high stardard under 17 first semi-final and will meet Leongatha in the preliminary final, the Magpies lost to Drouin in the under 15 first semi-final, Maffra lost the second semi to Traralgon 24-19, and the Sale under 13 team will play Leongatha in the preliminary final after losing to Wonthaggi in the second semi-final 36-33.
