Grammar enters new team

IN last Wednesday night's touch competition at Stephenson Park Gippsland Grammar's second team competed for the first time, going down to Nagle College four tries to five.

Nagle College has many talented players and it was a credit to Grammar 2 that it pushed its opposition to within a try.

Nagle College was missing coach John Katal, who is now recovering from the removal of a brain tumour.

Andrew Nicholas for Grammar scored three tries with one to Rowan Salerman.

Paul and Louis Toney were members of the original Grammar team and are now vital members of the number two team.

Scorers for Nagle College were Craig Campbell with two tries and one each to Chris Gascoigne, Jacob Harris and Drew Pryor-Holmes.

The best players of the match were Campbell, Nicholas and Gascoigne.

In a very competitive game, Phoenix defeated an undermanned Mancans five tries to four.

In the first half Phoenix were four tries to two and then in the second half Mancans showed a great team effort to score two tries to Phoenix one.

Henry Ropeti top-scored for Phoenix with two tries. Brad Light, Gavin O'Shanassy and Matt Smith each scored one try.

For Mancans, Gerard Bonaventura top-scored with two tries. Andrew Mason and Peter Murdoch each scored a try.

Best players were O'Shanassy, Murdoch and Col Haywood with Chantelle McCann winning the encouragement award.

Stegbar Storm was too strong for CATs, winning five to one.

Darren Just scored two tries with one each to John Logan, Matthew Walker and Damien Gibbons. Mark Elliman was the only scorer for CATs.

A reinvigorated Leesons team outscored The Fist, seven tries to three.

In one of the best tries of the night, Mick Gander ran 75 metres down the sideline to score his first try of the season.

Other scorers for Leesons were Steve Deveney with three with two to Bryan Lazzaro.

Nic Balfour scored one on his return from injury.

The Fist was undermanned with only six players on the field with no interchange players.

Robbie Lawler scored two tries with one to Stuart Wheal.

Best players were Lazzaro, Richard Bligh and Elizabeth Scott. Melissa Turnbull won the encouragement award.

Gippsland Grammar 1 team defeated the talented Payless Promotion five tries to four.

In the first hale Grammar only scored one try while keeping Payless scoreless.

Top-scorer for Gippsland Grammar was Derek Mwagiru with two tries. Jake Cockburn, David Commins and Kahli Higgins each scored one try.

For Payless, Tim Craig top-scored with two tries with one each to Tom Craig and Matt Walker.

Best players were Tim Craig, Cockburn and Mwagiru. Stef Pelz won the encouragement award.

Tomorrow night from 6.30pm Nagle College will play Payless Promotions and Gippsland Grammar plays Stegbar Storm.

From 7.20pm Mancans plays Leesons and The Fist plays Gippsland Grammar 2.

Phoenix plays CATs from 8.10pm.
