THE Sale and District touch grand finals were played in damp conditions last Wednesday night at Stephenson Park with Phoenix, Nagle College and Gippsland Grammar B winning their respective divisions.
In A division, Phoenix out-scored Mancans by one try in each half, giving it a 5-3 victory.
At half-time Phoenix led 2-1 in a very tight game with Gavin O'Shanassy leading the way with two tries. Gerard Bonaventura was the only scorer for Mancans in the first half.
In the second half, Phoenix player Lionel Trewin scored two tries with one from David Ropeti. Mancans' Bonaventura went on to score another try, while Peter Murdoch also scored for Mancans.
Both teams showed pace with Trewin, O'Shanassy, Aaron Spencer and Bonaventura the real pace setters.
Best players were O'Shanassy, Spencer, Bonaventura and Jo Ayers.
B division was won by Nagle College with Steve Wright scoring the winning try in the final seconds of the game.
The new-look Leesons team, sporting new team colours, was able to match the pace of the young Nagle combination and with scores level at 2-all at half-time.
It was not until the final seconds that Wright ran 50 metres down the sideline to scored the winning try
Best players were Craig Campbell, Ryan Walsh, Steve Wright and Mel Gascoigne.
Gippsland Grammar B is a new team in the competition won the C division grand final.
Grammar's young brigade showed too much pace for The Fist, winning 10 tries to three. Grammar had four interchange players while The Fist had none.
Lester Gould scored three tries for Grammar, Alex Rowles and Paul Toney two each and Logan Deschepper, Jake Joyce and Andrew Nicholas one each. There were the first tries for Toney this season.
Best players were Jake Joyce, Sarah Clark, Sian Toney and Deschepper.
In the presentations made after the A division grand final, Jake Joyce won the men's best-and-fairest award with an amazing 36 votes, while Jo Ayers won the female award.
Brad Light won the male try scoring award with 33 tries. Five players tied for the female award; Tonilee Pelz, Kahli Higgins, Mel Gascoigne and Sharon Butt, each with five tries.
The male encouragement award was shared by four players; Mitch Fairbrother, Tsabuiri Nakagiri and Louis Toney. Stef Pelz won the female encouragement award.
The new touch season begins Wednesday night and will conclude with the grand final on December 2.
From 6.30pm Gippsland Grammar will play Mancans and CAT's plays Gippsland Grammar Swans.
The Fist plays Sale College and Phoenix plays Gippsland Grammar Barbarians from 7.20pm.
From 8.10pm Payless Promotions will take on Porky's Pines (formerly Leesons).
