New look for tennis

07 Sep, 2009 04:06 PM
A NEW name was among the changes confirmed at the recent Sale-Heyfield Tennis Association annual meeting.

The change to Wellington Tennis was among a number of key changes to the present look of local tennis while a new committee was also elected.

The new executive committee for 2009-10 comprises president Gregor McNaughton, secretary Jaclyn Figas, treasurer Lorna Bailey, vice-president Nick Board and junior vice-president Lindsay Drew with the recording officer Di Arnott.

With the passing of the motion to change the name to Wellington Tennis, incoming president McNaughton was elated with the decision, believing it was more representative of the vast geographical area within the Wellington Shire in which to source players.

Some players, new to the area have mistakenly gained the impression the former association is for residents of the towns named, whereas there are another eight clubs from a variety of towns and localities which comprise this association.

Wellington Tennis is also keen for the existing club base to expand and would also be keen to hear from any new club wishing to form part of the association.

In an attempt to entice more players to participate in its summer Saturday competition, Wellington Tennis will be trialling a new format for the senior competition. Traditionally, the season has been from October to March, however, for this coming season, it will be conducting two shorter competitions.

The new format will see the first season beginning on October 3 with the finals prior to Christmas.

The second season will get underway on January 23 with the finals in March.

McNaughton emphasised this was a trial in which Wellington Tennis was keen to evaluate at the end of the summer season to determine if greater interest and player participation could be generated.

The junior competition will remain a single season, beginning on October 10 with finals also in March.

There will be the traditional Christmas-New Year break to coincide with the school holidays.

To be eligible for this year's junior competition, players must be under the age of 18 years on October 1.

As many clubs have already began player registration for the new season, players are urged to contact their club to confirm their intention of playing as soon as possible and before September 16 to enable team gradings to occur.

New members are welcomed by all clubs, and for details of your nearest club please phone the secretary on 0407 846 856 or 5144 5410 (ah).
